The first time I visited Pique in Gosforth, I only meant to have a quick drink—a glass of wine on a Saturday night. After a couple of glasses, I couldn’t resist trying their oysters. That experience made me want to return to sample more dishes.
A Warm Welcome at Pique
Pique is a South American-inspired restaurant in Gosforth, just off the High Street. I love the vibe of this restaurant from the minute I stepped inside. The atmosphere is calm, with dark-toned interiors and plenty of plants. It feels like a little escape from the hustle and bustle outside.
The bar at Pique is a great spot to stop by for a drink. The cocktail menu highlights tequila, mezcal, and pisco. They also offer a fantastic selection of wine and beer. I can never resist oysters when I see them on a menu. Pique didn’t disappoint; they were simple, fresh, and high quality—exactly what you want in an oyster. If you don’t like raw oysters, there’s a cooked option too.

That first visit made me eager to come back. So, when I was out shopping alone and wanted a quick bite, I knew I could count on Pique.
Perfect Small Plates for Lunch
The small plates menu is perfect for lunch, especially if you’re dining alone. It’s not overwhelming or too heavy. I ordered the hummus and the belly pork with pineapple.

The hummus was delicious—creamy and just the right amount of spice. I liked that it came with tortilla chips instead of bread, which made it feel lighter for lunch. The belly pork was the highlight. The meat was tender and rich, perfectly balanced by sweet pineapple and a little sharpness. It was filling but not too heavy.
Exceptional Service
The service at Pique is excellent. The staff are attentive but never overbearing. I could take my time and never felt awkward about eating alone. It’s a comforting feeling to be in a place where you can enjoy your meal without pressure.
Chef Bobby Smail leads the kitchen, and his experience shines through in the menu. The South American influence comes through in dishes like ceviches, anticuchos, tacos, and grilled meats. Everything is balanced and uncomplicated, making it easy to enjoy.
Affordable Dining Experience
Prices are reasonable. Small plates usually cost £8 to £11, and mains range from the mid-teens to mid-£20s. You can have a light meal for under £20 or choose something bigger. This level of flexibility makes it easy to return whenever you like.
You can meet friends, sit at the bar, or eat alone and still feel comfortable. For me, it’s one of the best restaurants in Gosforth because of the good food, calm atmosphere, and great service. I’ll be back soon, probably for another quiet lunch and maybe more oysters.
