Kalimera Gosforth: A Greek Café Bringing Mediterranean Food to the Heart of Gosforth

Anyone who’s returned from Greece knows the feeling. You miss the food almost immediately: the coffee culture, the pastry. We’ve been chasing that feeling ever since we went to Corfu last year. So discovering Kalimera Greek Bakery, an authentic spot on Gosforth High Street, meant it was put right at the top of our must-go list.

Gosforth has no shortage of good places to eat, but Kalimera has swiftly made a name for itself.

Filo done properly

The counter immediately draws you in. Rows of golden pastries made choosing hard, but after drooling on the glass (metaphorically, of course), we picked the mini pies. At just 90p each, we had to try two of every kind, but it also made it far too easy to say, “just one more.”

The filo stands out: light, crisp, and perfectly layered, never greasy. Each bite snaps cleanly, revealing soft, seasoned fillings that don’t overpower the pastry. It’s the kind of balance you usually only find in a small bakery in Greece.

The spinach-and-feta filling in the mini pies was the highlight.

Sweet options sit alongside the savoury, with syrupy pastries, orange pie, kataifi, and cakes that look rich without feeling heavy. Everything feels fresh, and more importantly, authentic.

Have you ever had a Greek Coffee?

Greek coffee is made by slowly brewing very finely ground coffee, water, and sugar together in a small pot called a briki. The mixture is unfiltered and poured straight into a small cup, grounds included. This results in a thick texture and deep flavour that pairs naturally with the bakery's filo pastries.

Although authentic Greek coffee isn’t to my taste, I tried it in Athens, and it nearly blew my head off. I've heard on good authority that Kalimera’s Greek Coffee is true to tradition and “absolute perfection”. For fans of milkier coffee, the usual barista menu is available.

Calm, considered, and welcoming

The interior deserves its own mention. Kalimera avoids gimmicks and instead embraces warmth. Natural light, calm colours, and thoughtful details give the space an easy, welcoming feel. It’s busy without feeling hurried, and there’s a genuine sense that people want to stay rather than grab and run.

There’s a cosiness here that goes beyond the décor. Staff are relaxed, friendly, and obviously proud of what they’re serving. That matters. It sets the feeling.

A welcome addition to the North East food scene

If Greece sits high on your list, or you simply value pastry made with care, Kalimera Bakery delivers. It keeps things focused: good coffee, proper filo, and a reason to slow down on Gosforth High Street.
