Flat Iron Has Opened in Newcastle - and We Went Along to See What the Hype Is About

Newcastle’s food scene has had another big name land in the city, and this one has been on a lot of people’s lists for a while. Flat Iron has officially opened its Newcastle restaurant on Grey Street, bringing its well-known steak concept to one of the city’s most beautiful streets.

Flat Iron has built its name around making good steak feel accessible. The idea is simple: quality steak, a small menu, reasonable prices, and a restaurant that feels relaxed rather than formal. It started in London and has since grown across the UK, so it was only a matter of time before Newcastle got one.

Inside Flat Iron Newcastle

The Newcastle restaurant sits in a great spot on Grey Street, right in the middle of town and close to the Theatre Royal, Monument and plenty of other bars and restaurants. It’s a strong location, especially if you’re planning food before drinks, date night, theatre plans or a meal that doesn’t feel like too much of a faff.

Inside, the restaurant feels warm and busy without being overwhelming. There’s a central bar, a 95-cover dining room, vintage-style furniture and street-side seating looking out onto Grey Street. It still has that chain restaurant efficiency, but it doesn’t feel soulless.

We were really impressed by the interior. It feels polished, but not stiff. You could go for a quick steak after work or make it part of a proper night out.

The Food

The main thing people go to Flat Iron for is, of course, the steak.

We had the signature Flat Iron steak, and it was cooked perfectly. It was tender, full of flavour and exactly what you’d hope for from somewhere that has made its name on doing steak well.

One of the things I like about Flat Iron is that it doesn’t overcomplicate things. The menu is focused, which means you’re not sitting there trying to choose from pages and pages of options. You go for steak, you add sides, and you’re sorted.

The mash was the real surprise for us. I know it sounds dramatic to say it was the nicest mash I’ve ever had, but it genuinely was up there. Creamy, rich and the perfect accompaniment to steak.

Flat Iron may be best known for its signature flat iron steak, but there are other options on the menu, too, if you fancy something different. You can usually find other cuts of beef, specials and a burger, so it still works if not everyone at the table wants the same thing.

Flat Iron is also known for the little extras, and I have to say, they do make the experience feel more fun. The free popcorn at the start is a nice touch, and the ice cream machine at the end is a great idea for a menu with no dessert options. The ice cream tasted really high-quality, not just an afterthought.

It’s a small thing, but it makes the visit feel memorable.

Is Flat Iron Worth Visiting?

For me, yes.

Newcastle already has some great places for steak, but Flat Iron offers something slightly different. It’s casual, central and straightforward. You don’t need to save it for a special occasion, but it still feels like a treat.

It’s also a good option if you want somewhere reliable in town. The sort of place where you can book before a show, meet someone for a midweek meal or head in when you want steak without the full fine dining price tag.

The big test with a new chain opening in Newcastle is whether it actually adds something or feels like another London brand dropping into the city and hoping for the best. Flat Iron feels like it fits. Grey Street is a strong home for it; the space looks good, and the food did what it needed to do.

Final Thoughts

We really enjoyed our visit to Flat Iron Newcastle. The steak was cooked perfectly, the mash was incredible, the interiors were lovely, and the little extras, like popcorn and ice cream, made it feel fun.

It’s not trying to be the most experimental restaurant in Newcastle, and that’s fine. It knows what it is: a good steak restaurant with a simple menu, a relaxed feel and a few nice touches that make you want to go back.
